About Us

Meet Dr. Murphy

Jill M. Murphy, MD, PhD graduated from the highly competitive MD/PhD Scholars Program in the College of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she earned both her medical and doctoral degrees. Her PhD work focused on the genetic causes of breast cancer. Following graduation from medical school, Dr. Murphy completed a 6-year plastic surgery residency program at the University of Kansas where she gained broad research and clinical experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Before joining UPMC Altoona, Dr. Murphy worked in South Dakota where she was part of a busy group practice treating patients from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. At UPMC Altoona’s plastic surgery department, she joins a multispecialty group, which provides an opportunity for increased collaboration with other doctors.

Dr. Murphy specializes in a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures, including breast reduction and cosmetic breast surgery, breast reconstruction after mastectomy or lumpectomy, body contouring after massive weight loss, eyelid surgery, skin cancer excision, labiaplasty, BOTOX® for migraines and excessive sweating, scar revision, complex wound care and closure, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, and cosmetic procedures.

Dr. Murphy enjoys watching baseball games and raising ducks with her husband and two children.

Nadine Gwizdak – Surgical Technician

A certified surgical technician, Nadine is Dr. Murphy’s private scrub assistant. She works closely with Dr. Murphy and her nursing staff to provide you outstanding care from the pre-operative consultation through the post-operative process.

Nadine is a graduate of Lock Haven University with more than 10 years of experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery and dermatology. She enjoys being part of the UPMC Altoona Plastic surgery team, and takes pride in improving the overall patient experience.

When she’s not a work, Nadine enjoys spending time with her husband, three children, family, and friends. She loves the outdoors and relishes hobbies such as baking, crafts, and oil painting.

Sandy Young, RN

A graduate of the Community College of Allegheny County with an associate degree in nursing, Sandy has spent the last 12 years of her career in plastic surgery. Spending time with grandchildren and travel are Sandy’s favorite ways to spend her leisure time.

Lindsay Shawley, LPN

Lindsay has been a licensed practical nurse for over 15 years and has been with UPMC Altoona Plastic Surgery since 2019. Lindsay meets with patients as a member of our care team and follows them closely through their pre- and post-operative care journeys. She also does a lot behind the scenes to help the office run smoothly.

Outside of the office, she enjoys hiking and spending time with her teenage daughter and their dog.

Melissa Markovich – Patient Access

Melissa has been part of the UPMC Altoona team since 2005, and her face is the first you’ll see at our front desk when entering the office.

She enjoys helping patients feel comfortable when taking the first step to schedule a consultation with a member of the clinical staff. She is eager to listen to and answer any questions you might have about the process as well as accommodate any special requests or needs.

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family (plus five cats and a miniature dachshund!), going on long bike rides, and traveling.
